Ulaanbaatar city’s budget amendment for 2023 included the measures to prevent crimes and violations and protect children. In this context, it is planned to install LED lighting in pedestrian crossings in 102 locations around schools in the capital.
Deputy Governor in charge of the Social Sector, Green Development, and Air and Environmental Pollution O.Nominchimeg said, "In order to improve the protection of children in the area around the school, and to prevent crimes and violations, numerous measures have been included in the Ulaanbaatar city’s budget amendment for 2023. For example, research was conducted on black spots or locations where traffic accidents often occur, and the budget was approved to install LED lightings at those locations. As of the first nine months of 2023, 379 children were injured in traffic accidents in the capital, and 65 percent of them were injured while crossing the road on a pedestrian crossing. It is caused by poor visibility and insufficient lighting, and the risk of accidents is high between 07:00-08:00 in the morning and 17:00-20:00 in the evening. Therefore, it is necessary to improve lightings of pedestrian crossings when children arrive and leave school.”
According to the black spots survey, while the lighting around 70 schools is acceptable, 102 locations have no lighting. Therefore, it is planned to install LED lighting in the dark areas of the ger areas mostly. Due to the fact that the budget for the construction of LED lightings in those locations will be allocated to the districts and the authority will be transferred, Deputy Governor O.Nominchimeg met with the governors of the nine districts and instructed them to carry out the work urgently.
