Governor of the Capital city and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar D.Sumiyabazar met with representatives of public transport companies, and exchanged views and discussed solutions to meet the needs, requirements and standards of citizens. The meeting was attended by the management and related officials of about 20 public and private organizations engaged in public transport services.
During the meeting, Head of the Public Transport Department of the Capital city B.Javkhlantbaatar said, "The bus fleet is being renewed to increase the accessibility of the capital's public transport. Since 2020, 79 electric buses, 284 large-capacity “Euro 5” diesel buses, 10 double-decker, electric-powered buses, 75 children's buses, two medium-capacity buses, and a total of 450 buses were imported. In 2023-2024, it is planned to renew the bus fleet with 600 large-capacity diesel engine buses, 160 electric-engine buses, and 50 medium-capacity buses, totaling 810 buses. In this context, it is planned to import a total of 704 buses from September 2023 to January 2024.
In addition, public transport services were transferred to the winter time schedule, and from September 15, night transport services were started in eight directions.
Governor of the Capital city and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar D.Sumiyabazar said, “Public transport services must be accessible and meet standards. We are working towards this goal. Enterprises also need to fulfill their contractual obligations and be financially disciplined. According to research, our policy was aimed at preventing people from using public transport. In 2007, 67 percent of the capital city's citizens used public transportation, but this number decreased to 34 percent in 2022.
In Ulaanbaatar, it is necessary to increase the availability of public transport and introduce a subway. In this context, a working group has been established and related research and activities are being carried out. The bus fleet is being completely renewed with the budget funds of the state and the capital. It is also necessary to renew the route and planning. A total of more than 1220 buses are being renovated. The bus fleet has never been renewed on such a scale before. In addition, a set of Ulaanbaatar city laws is being developed to change the laws that slow the development of the city.
For the past 30 years, we have only been stuck with consequences. Now, a Think Tank has been established under the Governor of the Capital city, working with academic institutions, research centers, and more than 30 research institutes of universities to develop cause-based policies.”
The management of public transport enterprises said that the lack of human resources is the most pressing problem. Moreover, they proposed to improve the policies, management and arrangement. They also emphasized the need to extend the 10-minute tea break for drivers to 20 minutes and solve the problem of sanitary facilities.
The Mayor expressed that the capital city will support enterprises in all aspects to improve the quality and availability of public transport.
